Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)

Frendoc have been commissioned to provide a minor injuries service called the Frendoc MIU (Minor Injuries Unit).

This is a nurse led service with back up from GPs from the Out of Hours Service.

OPENING TIMES

At Frenchay Outpatients
Monday to Friday 18:30 to 22:30, Saturday, Sunday & Bank Holidays 08:00hrs to 20:00hrs

The service started in October 2007 and is a walk-in service.

HOW THE SERVICE WORKS

Member of staff

No appointment necessary. During opening hours waiting times are displayed on our website at www.frendoc.com. You will be treated by one of our specialist nurses, if the nurse is concerned about your injury a doctor is always on hand from Frendoc GP out of hours service to assess you further. Or you may be referred to another service. Our aim is to ensure that you receive the very best in patient care and it is free to everyone.

The types of minor injury that Frendoc MIU can treat are:

  • Sports injuries, minor sprains
  • Joint pains
  • Minor head injuries, providing there was no loss of consciousness
  • Eye problems – minor eye infections, scratches, removal of foreign bodies, conjunctivitis etc
  • Minor burns and wounds
  • Cuts/grazes and lacerations
  • Sprains and strains
  • Insect/animal bites and stings (including human bites)
  • Infected wounds

We Cannot Treat

The nurses at the Frendoc MIU are unable to provide assistance with:

  • Repeat prescriptions
  • Travel vaccinations
  • Medicals
  • Sick certificates
  • Minor Illness
  • Dental Problems

Attending the Frendoc MIU may mean that you reduce the waiting time that you might have encountered if you had attended an A&E department.

For minor illness please call Frendoc GP out of Hours on 0845 121 0504, and they’ll be able assist you with where to go for your problem.

Your minor injury may mean that you need a further investigation or an X-Ray in which case we are ideally located in Frenchay Hospital in order to refer you to the Frenchay A&E department.

MEDICAL RECORDS

Member of staff

Frendoc does not have access to your medical records or hospital records. Following a treatment at the Frendoc MIU the details will be sent to your surgery by 08.30am the following day to be added to your medical records. This allows for any necessary follow up arrangements to be made by your surgery.
